Gustave et Voltaire: My White French Buffet/ Mon long buffet blanc

One day, as I was driving the car, I saw this dismantled dresser on the pavement in front of a house along with other rubbish. I stopped and rang the door bell to ask if I could take it, but it was so big it didn't fit into my car. So the owner offered to deliver it to me in his truck! This long dresser waited in my garage for about a year then we moved and it waited another couple of months in our new garage.
Un jour en conduisant je vis sur le bord de la route un buffet démonté devant une maison avec d'autre détritus. Je me suis arrêtée et j'ai sonné pour demander si je pouvais le prendre mais c'était trop long pour rentrer dans ma voiture. Le propriétaire m'a gentiment proposé de me le livrer chez moi avec sa camionnette. Ce buffet est resté pendant un an dans notre garage, puis nous a suivi dans notre déménagement, et il est resté encore quelques moi dans notre nouveau garage.

Then I finally got the courage to attempt assembling it up. I had only ever seen it dissembled into flat panels, so it was a lovely surprise an hour later to see a beautiful french buffet. I was amazed it wasn't missing one single crew after his long journey from the curb to our new house... The wood was damaged on the doors but mainly on the marquetry on top.
Puis j'ai enfin réussi à trouver le courage d'essayer de le remonter. Je ne l'avais que vu en morceaux, alors vous imaginez ma surprise quand une heure plus tard j'avais devant moi un magnifique buffet! J'était surtout étonnée qu'entre le trottoir et notre nouvelle maison il n'avait pas perdu une vis! Le bois était abîmé, surtout le plateau en marqueterie.

So I got to work with the varnish remover gel and the sander. Some of the stains were so deep, I actually worn out the marquetry. NOTE: Never over-use the sander on marquetry otherwise you wear out the thin layer of marquetry wood and expose the wood underneath which is a different colour!! :( Grrrrr
Alors je me suis mise au travail avec le gel décapant et la ponceuse. Quelques tâches étaient tellement profonde que j'ai complètement poncé la marqueterie. A noter: Ne jamais insister avec la ponceuse sur de la marqueterie! Cela l'use jusqu'à la couche de bois différent du dessous, qui est d'une couleur différente!! :( Arrrg

I applied a white wash to the marquetry on top, then two coats of polyurethane for protection. I painted the rest in white then distressed with sand paper to emphasise the carvings. I waxed with clear wax to allow the white to remain pure and bright. I wanted this dresser to look old and used but still bright and fresh in its colour, a pure white. A bit like a beautiful summer dress: vintage in its shape but fresh and new in its colour...
J'ai éclaircie le plateau du dessus avec un peu de peinture blanche très diluée appliquée au torchon, puis 2 couches de vernis pour protéger. J'ai peint en blanc le reste du buffet puis légèrement poncé au papier fin les détails moulés et les arrêtes. J'ai cirée à la cire transparente pour laisser au blanc sa pureté. J'avais envie que ce buffet ai l'air usé et ancien, mais qu'il ai une couleur fraîche et pure. Un peu comme une belle robe d'été: vintage dans sa forme mais fraîche et neuve dans sa couleur...

My new/old french white buffet found it's perfect place behind my sofa, facing my dinning room table. I now use it for putting away fancy dishes, or hiding the children's chocolate treats ;)
Mon nouveau/ancien buffet a trouvé sa place derrière mon canapé, devant ma table à manger. Je l'utilise pour ranger de la belle vaisselle et cacher les chocolats des enfants ;)
